Just bought a used 02 400ex, it runs through the gears fine at my house, but doesnt not idle. shuts off if no throttle. I took it to an ATV park higher elevation and while up there had no top end. it kept boggind down and backfiring. its all stock. any ideas???

The carb sounds dirty. Also check the air and fuel filter.

Yes clean your carb. Most likely your pilot jet is clogged. Also adjust your idle if needed.

Cleaning the carb isnt that hard of a job. Clean out the tank and put a in line filter in also.

Ditto..mine did that a bit too...sticky float..been running Sea Foam in the tank and had no problems since..i recamend it highly! while your in there dont forget to blow out the pickups

cleaned carb pretty good...put it back together and still wont idle. Thinking maybe bad gas??

Did you remove the slow jet and clean it out? that would be the main reason as to why you won't Idle, that or someone set the Idle too low.

also i adjusted the idle screw up and finally it would stay running but it kept backfiring...

yes i took the whole carb apart. It was pretty dirty cleaned it with carb cleaner

did you blow it out too? and take a tiny piece of wire and clean out the jet orfices? the tiniest of dirt will make you pull out your hair, I gaurantee it.

Yeah, I agree. When they're real dirty it can be a pain to get them unstopped.

I've been screwing with mine for 2 weeks now off and on, I still have a hesitation spot in it, I'm jst going to buy a new carb..lol
