Alright fellas, I picked up an ‘86 trx 350 4x4 for a helluva price. Typical “ran fine when parked” type of deal.

Fast forward a few weeks, I’ve drained and cleaned the fuel tank, replaced fuel lines, cleaned the carb, adjusted the valves, new plug and filters etc.. and got it to start.

It doesn’t run well yet but it will soon, on to my question. Think ignition coil. Primary resistance is .7 ohms which is out of spec (.1-.2) secondary resistance is within spec. What will this cause? I’m thinking weak spark but wanted to ask anyway.

I did order a new coil just because they’re relatively inexpensive and it won’t hurt to have an extra.

The issue I’m having is a backfires and unburnt fuel (black smoke) when it does run.

It does have a cheap aftermarket fuel pump on it for now and I went ahead and ordered a new Honda cdi because I’m leaning to this being the major issue. Factory Honda pump will be ordered shortly as I know these Chinese pumps suck.

On another subject, will you guys recommend a pic hosting site that’s easy to use from a mobile browser. My old supermotors account is a pain in the butt on mobile.

And thanks a ton for the service manual downloads!

I would start with a good carb cleaning or carb rebuild. shindy carb kits are the best. rich black smoke tells me its running rich. after siting for a long time ?, the carbs on these MUST be right !.

I cleaned the carb and adjusted according to the manual. I do have a shindy kit on order with the cdi.

Factory coil on order. I’m one of those guys that like factory parts. It probably stems from working in the Auto industry for years :grin

The Chinese fuel pump will be gone soon too, Christmas is putting a dent in my disposable income:sad

if its putting out black smoke on exhaust ?, then its running rich, either carb is not clean ?, or jets are bad ?, or fuel mixture jet needle is not set right ?, when you cleaned the carb, guessing you removed the pilot jet ( fuel mixture needle ), did you get it all back together right ?, the reason I ask is..most honda carbs have a very tiny o-ring down inside there ?, if its not there ?, or this jet needle gets '' double stacked '' O-rings ?, it wont deliver air and fuel correctly :).

Oring is back where it goes, pilot is set at 1 1/2 turns out as stated in the manual. I did not replace any soft parts in the carb when I had it apart but I will when the kit gets here.

It acts like it’s “missing” when it runs.

Does flipping the enrichment (choke) off n on cause a change in engine running? Does the cable tense up when you go to choke off? Then the starter valve is not reseating in the bore of the starter (enrichment) valve cylinder

I would first suspect starter valve oring worn, and or the throttle linkage is not well synchronized–backfires usually lean. And rich maybe combo of those two plus dirty carb.

This exactly happened to me. I first had to run a pipe cleaner thru that enrichment passage when I recleaned the carb, replace the valve, then when installed make sure the throttle linkage slack was properly adjusted. Then adjust the throttle screw and tune the pilot jet

yes

no

when the kit gets here i'll be sure to go thru the enrichment passage again. linkage slack is correct per the manual.

obviously its a fuel and ignition issue that I have. I was more curious about the coil testing out of spec and what it would cause exactly.

Edit: you guys rock!

Edit#2 I'm not gonna worry about trying to tune it until I get a factory fuel pump as theres no telling what this Chinese one is putting out. hell, Im just happy I don't have to dig into the bottom end

... I haven’t turned wrenches professionally in years but even assuming free labor, the costs add up quickly to do it right. Oh and it’s an ‘86 ?
'86 ?..I don't see a problem ??..i've done them older than that !..lol.

Shindy carb kit came in, saw I made a rookie mistake not noticing that i was missing the needle seat... I guess when the previous owner had it apart he didn’t put it back and I didn’t catch it the first time around. Cleaned again and reassembled, runs like new. Now to fix some cracked plastic and get it looking as good as it runs! Thanks for the help?

Good job—didja get the manual download ok?
Now to fulfill those other periodic requirements like brake adjustment diff oil and brake fluid change.
The manual downloaded just fine, been printing sections as I need them.
Gonna have fun with the brakes.. system was dry. Got it all cleaned out and flushed, now to tackle the bleeding.
