2004 Recon 250 TM will not stay running

Acquired this from a friend in trade for fixing his motorcycle, sat for about 5 years. I can get it to start but it will die after about 30 seconds. Rebuilt the carb and cleaned out the tank. Have to crank it for 15-20 seconds about 2-3 times before it will start, run for 30 seconds then die. Idles rough, pretty sure it is a carb problem, jets and mixture screw are new. Passages are clear, nothing I do seems to change the way it runs. Thoughts on next steps?

I'll beat all the guys by asking did you use Shindy carb rebuilt kit or an inexpensive ebay or amazon kit? Those inexpensive kits can cause their own problems. Did you check the petcock in the tank to be sure it's intact and clean? Is the fuel knob working properly when moved from "ON" "Off" and "Reserve" Is the fuel line clear?
New NGK spark plug?
Please do a search of this forum for the sticky about how to properly clean a carb. With a bike that sat for that long the carb most likely needs to soak before attempting to clean it. Sorry to say that I doubt your carb is as clean as you think it is. It took me cleaning mine several times to get it perfectly clean and working.

I got a cheap rebuild kit and used what I needed from it, mostly just the jets and needle valve. I talked to a buddy who works on motorcycles and he also said to soak the carb. I have a quality rebuild kit arriving today. Fuel supply is fine, tank was cleaned out and petcock works as intended. I read the sticky on carb cleaning, didnít know if there was a problem area that could cause it it behave as it is doing now. Thanks.

The only carb parts that work are OEM Honda parts, or a genuine Shindy kit. If you bought any other brand its not useable.

Found that out the hard way, the float valve didnít close, leaking fuel out the overflow. The only parts from that kit I used are the jets and the needle valve, which I miced, they were good.

Jets and float valve are junk. Gotta use OEM or Shindy only.
