Jeepwm69 Well if you were close I was going to let you borrow one, but I'm in Arkansas. LOL.

jczepil Jeep,

I'm up in British Columbia, Canada. Any help would be appreciated.......

If a piece of square tubing would work than I can try that, but would prefer to get the correct socket if possible.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeepwm69 Where are you located Jczepil? You need a pinion nut socket, although a properly sized length of square tubing will usually work.

jczepil Hey Guys,

Finally got around to taking the rear end apart and the pinion bearing in the rear end was completely failed. It looks like the pinion is actually ok, so I just bought a new bearing set for the rear end.

Anyway, while disassembling it looks like I need a special tool to remove the pinion from the housing. I'll attach a picture so you guys can see what I mean.

Any idea where to get this tool?

Thanks,

Jeff

Goober You can click my parts links and see if Rocky Mtn has them (under Final Driven Gear IPB); then use the part number to search fleabay occasionally NOS units pop up.
By that time you should be confident in the type of parts you need. Suspect and Check also too the other components like drive shaft but I think youíre looking in the right area.

jczepil Goober,

Thanks for the advice. I have it parked now and I'll tear it apart and see if its the axle. It sounds like a ring/pinion issue the way it acts, but I hope it's just the axle. Any idea where to get a replacement ring/pinion for these old ATV's?

Goober Itís a 2wd right? First thing I would check is the diff oil level. Maybe just empty. If full, you might lift it up and see if you have any slip in the drive line.

If you change the oil you might find chunks of metal in there. If so your pinion or axle or both are worn. Hopefully just the axle I wouldnít drive it any more until you pull the axle.

Not fam with this rig but Iím sure the service manual has a troubleshooting guide for this

1986 FourTrax 250 Gear Grinding

Hey Guys,

Quick question for you, I hear a grinding in the axle/driveshaft location when I'm in reverse on my 1986 Honda Fourtrax 250. It sounds as if the gears are grinding and it gets worse when I'm turning and in reverse. Any idea of what could be wrong here and where I should start looking? Don't see to have any issues when going forward......

Thanks,

Jeff
