Will not start with the button. New solenoid good battery.??

Just cleaned the carb and got my buddies 05 400af going. He said it would start with the button. Figured easy fix? well cleaned carb out and jumped solenoid she ran great. Checked solenoid and she was getting power to both small wires when button was pushed but no power on the starter side. Figure solenoid was shot. Put new Honda solenoid on and same exact thing. No clicking, nothing grounds are good, neutral light is on. Could it be a bad solenoid? Fuses all checked out. Check the starter button and all is well ( same with the kill switch). Seems like the solenoid is frozen makes no noise at all, has 12.9v at the battery side of the solenoid. Will fire rite up if you jump the solenoid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The problem is with the small wires on the solenoid. I believe one is yellow/red. The other is light green/red. When you push the button, the y/r wire is supposed to show 12 volts, but the lg/r wire is supposed to show 0 volts. Since the lg/r wire is showing 12 volts, that means the lg/r wire is not connected to ground like it should be. The lg/r wire goes to the neutral switch, and when the transmission is in neutral, that should complete the ground circuit through the lg/r wire to the solenoid. You say the neutral light is on, so that indicates that the neutral switch is working. Therefore the problem would seem to be a break in the lg/r wire somewhere, or a bad connection in the path of the lg/r wire somewhere between the solenoid and the neutral switch. You could prove this out with the use of a temporary wire. Connect one end of it to the point where the lg/r wire goes into the connector at the solenoid. Connect the other end of the temporary wire to the machine frame. Now see if the starter works.

Ran a jumper from the lg/r wire to ground and still nothing. Getting 12+ volts out of the lg/r wire on the solenoid side. Any other suggestions?

Was the connector for the two wires (lg/r and y/r) connected when you hooked up that jumper wire? It needs to be connected. Just jam one end of the jumper wire in the back of the connector where the lg/r wire is.

You are measuring 12 volts on the lg/r wire and that is a sure sign that the lg/r wire is not grounded. It must be grounded for the solenoid to work.

Yes lg/r and y/r. I did it connected and lg/r unconnected. Not sure if my jumper was making good contact. I?ll try again tomorrow once I get home and let you know what I find. Thank you again for your help

Just got to work and was just thinkin about the problem. Did a search and get a couple of different answers. Could the diode in the fuse box be the problem? Both wires go to the the diode so is it possible it?s letting voltage go thru? Thanks again for the help

I agree that your jumper was probably not making good contact at one end or the other. The whole idea of the jumper is to make sure that the lg/r wire is connected to a known good ground. If it is, then there can be no voltage on the lg/r wire.

I don't think the diode is your problem. The purpose of the diode is to protect the rest of the system from a voltage spike when the starter shuts off, and they hardly ever fail anyway.
