1987 Fourtrax 250x Faded/Flaking Plastic

So I have had this ATV for many years, it is my favorite bike and I want it to look the best it can be. The plastic is pretty faded and it has this thing you can scrape the plastic with your fingernail and some of the plastic will flake off. A while back a guy was talking to me about a way to remove the layer of flakey plastic and not having to use sanding tools or rough chemicals, but I cannot remember what he said. Yeah, I know. its old plastic, it should not be tampered with, but it looks really bad. I have used many restoration products, the 40/60 mixture of boiled linseed oil and paint thinner, but noting worked. Could someone give me any ideas on what I could use to at least make the plastic look red instead of ugly pink? I can provide a picture to show the severity of the condition if needed. Thanks for reading my thread
