Problem with killing

We are trying to figure out what the problem is with our early 90's Honda 300 Fourtrax. It sat for a number of years.
We have replaced carburetor and oil temp sensor. Changed all fluids.
Now we got it running idles good. When started up oil temp light comes on then shortly off.
When run fast it will shut off at about 400 ft. Oil light comes on. Let it set and it will start again and do same thing.
When run very slow it will run longer before it shuts down.
Need to know what to check for next. Possible wire issue??

When it shuts down , are you putting your hand on the engine and see if it is in deed hotter than normal ---if not then it could be a wiring or sensor issue ---then again are you sure it is not just the carb shutting you down from bad fuel

Sounds like the carb bowl isn't getting fuel fast enough. I'd pull the fuel line from the carb and see how well it flows. Make sure there aren't any kinks in the line or its running up hill anywhere. If you have good gas flow at the end of the fuel line than you need to check the float level in the carb and the needle and seat valve in the carb.

I will forward this info to my husband.
We are running on flat surface. All tanks have been drained and filled with new.
We will check this and also ordered a new CDI Box to try.
Thanks for your suggestions.

We've drained fuel tank and filled with new. Engine does not feel hot. Installed a new oil temp sensor. So now will check the gas flow. Plus put a new CDI box on.

Thanks

Thanks
when you drained the tank, did you make sure the inside of tank was CLEAN before adding new fuel?
was the carb you replaced a OEM carb or a cheap china knock off, as these knock off's are very hit and miss, meaning MOST end up being bad carb's?

next have you replaced the fuel line from tank to cab>
the game is when something sits a LONG time,
you really need to make sure entire fuel system is clean and flowing good
this means
drain fuel tank, make sure inside of tank is clean
inspect peacock and make sure thing are free flowing , and also fuel lines
the reason is ethanol fuel as well as dirt and carp over time will gum up the inside of the peacock, and fuel lines(tank will get dirt and or even water in it over time too)
and if you DON"T confirm all things UP stream of a carb are good and clean, adding a NEW carb can be a waste of time, as , as soon as fuel flows thru dirty tank, peacock/.fuel lines, you can have a brand new dirty carb on the bike!
so, its about making sure all up stream items are good to rule things out in them
I am NOT sure if your model has a Fan control unit, but if it does, this too could be the problem, as on atv's that have them, they will trigger the oil light to come on and shut the atv down

as for a NEW CDI< again, aftermarket one's are HIT and MISS< I personally never buy afgtermarket electrical parts, far too often they don't work well or last long!
, but your atv, your money, your call!

I just redid an 300 fourtrax also; bought a new carb off of ebay. It worked fine for me, started right up, idles fine and runs great. The only issue was the fuel inlet pointed straight up instead of forward like the original. So it was rotated 45 degrees clockwise from the original carb. Because of this I had to put a longer fuel line on it and reroute it a bit to make sure gas flow freely.

From your description it sounds like you are running out gas in the carb. Once it sits a bit the carb bowl refils and it will start back up.

There is a screen in the bottom of the petcock— make sure it’s clear.
Although sounds like oil temp sensor, there is a diagnostics section page 20-4 of the service manual. Sometimes the alarm units go bad, too.

the screen, on the petcock, inside my gas tank, was disintegrating, on the 2000, so was the inside of the petcock. aint no telling what kind of gas was run through the tank, before i bought it. for i knew better, i ran ethanol gas. i might still have to on occasion. hope not..
