Lightbulb 400ex shifter return spring??????

hi i just got this quad. Its an 01. I noticed that my shifter shaft has up and down play in it. And when i shift up the shifter will stay stuck up and wont kick in gear until i push the shifter half way down where its supposed to be at. So im thinking its the return spring, but im going to replace it soon, but what should i watch out for when tearing apart the motor to split the cases? Any help is much appreciated!!

I dont think you have to split the cases. You just have to remove the right side clutch cover, remove clutch basket to get at it. But im not sure its been awhile. Best to get a Clymer manual and follow it.
