Project quad rebuild

I just purchased a 2001 fourtrax 350 ES. The quad is in realy nice shape, but, there is always a but, the engine/trany came as a box of parts. I got it cheap enough knowing that if I had to purchase a good used engine I would still be getting a good deal. The previous owner said the tranny wasn't shifting so he took the engine/trany apart to check it out and found out that it was one of the gears on the electric shifter. He had no idea how to put it back together and it has been sitting in his garage for the past year and decided to sell it. I downloaded the service manual and have taken an inventory of the parts and there are a few small peices that are missing but nothing serious. The case is split and the cranck, piston and cam shaft are still installed. All the bearings are still good. I cleaned the half of the case that doesn't have the crank ect in it and have lubricated the bearings. Everything seems fine with it. I need to clean the half that still has the the crank and other parts in and I don't want to remove the parts. What is the best way to clean it and with what. It only need to be flushed to clean out the dust that has settled from sitting for the past year. on the other half I used varosol first and then sprayed it down with walters slap shot, an arosol cleaner/degreaser. It cleans every bit of oil and grease off of anything. I didn't know if I should use it or not on this half because I can't get at the crank bearing to relubricate it. Is there something else that would work better and still leave a bit of lubrication for the bearings.

You'll be fine using what you used on the other half, just pour some good clean engine oil into the crankshaft journal areas, and into the end bearings....

Mmm, a basket case! Just picked up one of those myself a little while ago... I use the big blaster can of wd-40 to flush out the bottom end and bearings when I do mine, then lube them up good with a hand oiler full of good motor oil. On the overhead cams I use some assembly lube on the cam journals and lobes to keep it lubed on the first start. Always pop the valve cover and add a few cap fuls of oil, then pop an oil line lose and turn the engine over with a drill until its primed before you do the first start up, and you should be good to go.

Whatever is currently in one piece... 400 prairie with stuff, 300 fourtrax, 500 sportsman, yz 125...

Thanks guys. Pictures to come. I wish I would have taken a picture of the engine in the box. I was having my doubts once I got it home but it doesn't look that bad now that I have everything organized.
