1998 HONDA 300 Fourtrax

I have notice on my Fourtrax when you turn either way it makes a loud grinding noise in front. If you jack the bike up in the air ad turn it does not make the noise I took that big nut off the bottom of the steering colum and it does not make the sound so it's something with that nut tight that makes it make the sound. The steering colum goes through a square bracket that's in the frame is their some kind of bearing in their ? If so how do you get it out ?
