1986 Fourtrax 350 4x4 jumpy shifts and ginding gears???

Hi everyone I bought this beast about a week and a half ago, it is as the title says a 1986 Honda Fourtrax 350 4x4..... I was driving around in the river the other day and went to shift up and the trans went da da da clunk into gear and I stoped, went to nuteral and back up and it was fine....... SO on my way home after the adventure was done it did it again on the road and I thought what the #*$(@!!!!!!

I am shure the centrifical clutch needs to be adjusted because when you put it into first it sometimes jumps pretty good same as the other gears but would the ocasional gear grinding be a transmission? I hope not that is something I dont want to get into on a fourstroke!

The bike shifts fine though the gears when off but when running it can "sometimes" be a little stiff or on a rare ocasion it wont shift the first time you try to and ya have to pull up hard again. I have a hard enough time shifting over a long peroid of time because My left foot got run over a while ago and my tendons etc.... got crushed so I cant have this happen while riding.

Has anyone incountered this problem before???
I havnt looked at the clutches yet so I dont even know if the clutch basket is worn out and those dam disks.

Anyone with advice or knowledge on this problem?

wellllllllllll...lol...i can try to point you in the right area ?..but it's kinda hard to explain over the internet !..lol. first off..yes..it can be your clutch out of adjustment ?..or a few other things !. try adjusting the clutch first. if that does not work ?..then you will need to dig deeper !. left hand side..is where your foot shifter goes into the engine case..on the inside of this..is the outter end of your shift drum..this drum has a part that i call the star wheel..inside this star wheel is two rachet things that move in tandem when you lift up..or push down with your foot. when this takes place..your moving the shift drum..which in turn..rotates the shifting drum on the inside of your engine at the transmission..then your shifting forks move in the slots of the shifting drum..sooooooooo..you could have bad shifting drum forks ?..worn gear dogs ?..worn shifting drum slots ?..can be any or all of these ??. start with the clutch adjustment ?..if that does not work ?..wellll..lol..it's time to dig deeper..butttttttttttttttttt..before you start tearing your motor apart !!.make sure your rear differental is good ?..front differental is good ?. then you will know for sure your problem lies deeper in your transmission.

what would the differentials have to do with the shifting??? and if it helps sometimes when im in 4th or 5th gear and let off the throttle I hear a crunching noise which sounds like its on the right side of the bike cant tell where, but I figured that would be a somthing for another day???

the differental has nothing to do with your problem..i was mearly pointing this out for maintance..lol. this crunching noise your hearing ?..more than likely that is your cv joints poping..they do that after a few years. butttt..the cv joints has nothing to do with your tranny not shifting..this is all clutch..shift drum..shift forks..anything that is tied to the foot shifter.

your welcome. as for the cv joints going out ?..welllll...lol...yes..and no..they clunk..clank..and make all kinds of noise..but...this does not mean your gonna be high and dry..it just means they are badly worn...and need replacing..butttttttt..most are not around anymore !..finding new ones are not easy !..'86 models are NOT the same as for '87 to '89. why you ask ?..the '86 model was the very first trx350 4x4 honda made..and these years only had a different front brake drum set up..the brake drums are totally different than any other year..such as '87 to '89. this means..the front drive axle and splines are not the same after '86. if you can not find any for your atv ?, try pulling them down..and re-packing them with some fresh grease..make sure you clean all the old grease out of them !!..try not to take them apart..if you can help it ???..if you have never done these ??..they can get real confusing !!..lol. you may want to inpsect your cv-joint boots while you have it apart !. i'm pretty sure you can still order new boots ??.

As for the popping noise, is there a chance it may be a bad U joint??? id look but shaft is in a tube :/ my yamaha that I had a while ago didnt have any cover for it, it was fully exposed which most likely isnt good, Also to check the CV joint which I intend to do will I have to remove the wheel bearing? and Another problem is I cant even get my front hubs off the nut that holds em on is Stuck, my impact gun wont even take it off & I use that thing to put my trucks tires on :O
