Relay Contactor Problem

I am a new member and originally I posted this on the new member forum, but perhaps it is more appropriate in this forum.....

I have year 2000 300 Fourtax. I purchased it used about four years ago. It came with a Champion winch, which was not working when I purchased the ATV. I replaced the relay contactor and did some rewiring. Recently the winch quit working again, or, more accurately, it appears maybe the relay contractor quit working.

When I connect the battery directly to the winch, the winch works. I took the relay contactor apart and I did not see anything wrong, although I am not sure what to look for. When I put it back together, it worked a bit and then stopped again.

I have some questions: 1) are the relay contactors repairable, and, if so, what can be wrong with it; 2) if they are not, were can I purchase another one? Should they be available at a local ATV or motorcycle shop or an autoparts store, such as NAPA?

The last one I got from MOTO ALLIANCE of Rogers, Minnesota. It was $12.99 plus $10 shipping. To me, no more than I use the winch (I did put a snow plow on the ATV last winter) it did not seem to last long. I have the contactor installed in the box behind the seat. It seems pretty dry there, etc.

Thanks advance for any guidance. I am retired and enjoy the 300 Fourtrax. It is pretty handy for lots of things on a small acreage.

The contactor is non-serviceable, but you can buy them from Ebay.

Most 4-wheeler problems are caused by a loose nut connecting the handlebars and the seat!!

You only need two tools in life -- WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Thanks, I was afraid of that...on both counts. I used to buy on Ebay but since they went to PayPal, I have tried to avoid them after a bad experience.

Bookman, Here is a very good 30amp contactor/relay, on Amazon - where you can use your credit card, rather than Paypal: Amazon.com: 12V Solenoid Contactor Relay Winch: Patio, Lawn & Garden

Relay Contactor Problem

Turns out it was a poor connection of the wires going into the winch motor. Ya, I know, check the simple stuff first.

Thanks much.
