2011 rancher electric shift problem

Have a 2011 electric shift rancher with 800 miles. Problem started when it would not shift into 5th gear sometimes and now it grinds in 4th gear and will not engage. It also grinds a little when it goes into reverse but will engage.. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be and how do I fix it?? Help Please my boys are going nuts without it!!!

Make sure you have plenty (full) of oil in your engine/transmission, and that it is the CORRECT type of oil. You can not use regular automotive motor oil with your Rancher. Rather, you must use oil that is formulated for motorcycles/ATV's with wet clutches. You can get Honda oil, or you can get synthetic oil from Mobil1 or Amsoil. I use the Mobil1 4T motorcycle oil and love it. Also, your oil should be full to the top mark on your dip stick. (The engine and transmission use the same oil).

Along with the grinding in fourth, fifth and reverse, It also has a tapping sound while it is in neutral. The tapping sound is near where you put oil in the engine.

Have you checked your oil level? I'm also curious what a sample of your oil looks like. Understand that your engine oil is also your transmission oil. If it is low, your tranny won't work correctly. Pull out your dipstick and wipe the oil on your fingertip. Do you see any metalic particles? If so, then you'll need to visit your Honda dealer unless you're quite mechanically inclined. Keeping your oil up to the Full mark on your dipstick and changing your oil filters when necessary is essential when both your engine and tranny share the same oil. You should measure the oil on your dipstick by first removing the dipstick and wiping it off (clean). Then, set it in it's hole, but don't screw it down. Then, pull it back out and check the level. Last, but not least, you must use oil that is formulated for a wet clutch - NOT regular automotive oil.
PS: If your angle sensor was/is going bad (very unlikely), your ATV would simply stop and shut off. Bad angle sensors don't cause poor shifting and grinding gears.

Welcome to the forums. Have you tried adjusting the clutch freeplay? The clutch might not be completely disengaging when you shift.

You only need two tools in life -- WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.
