1985 250ES Big Red Exciter coil

I have a 1985 250ES Big Red that after it has been running for about 10-15 minutes just quits. I believe that the problem is the exciter coil since the resistance between the blk/red wire to ground goes from 360 ohms when it is cold to over 500 ohms when it quits. After about 5 minutes after it cools down the resistance for the exciter coil goes back down to 360 ohms then it starts. According to the service manual the blk/red wire to ground should read 50-200 ohms. My question is where is the exciter coil located?? Is it part of the alternator??
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forums. Yes, it's one of the coils on the stator/alternator assembly.

Most 4-wheeler problems are caused by a loose nut connecting the handlebars and the seat!!

You only need two tools in life -- WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.
