Question Engine

I run an 08 trx450er on sand and do a lot of drag racing. I had a full hrc kit on and it would fly. Now i know its still low in the numbers as far as hp goes. But I just installed a JE 12.8-1 piston and a full rs-2 comp series Yosh. Should i save up money and buy a big bore later on or go with a port and polish and bigger vavles with a carb bore to boot. What kind of hp difference am i looking at between the two ideas?

I can't quote exact HP numbers, but from a lot of experience with these engines, I would go with the port, polish, and bigger valves. The carb bore will give a nice increase in top end power too. The lower priced big bore kits are somewhat suspect, there have been reports of running hot. I build these motors for a few A class racers, and after a lengthy discussion with Mark Baldwin from Baldwin Motorsports, he said the same thing. If you're set on a big bore, save your money for an Ice Cube cylinder. Increased water jackets in the cylinder help keep temps at a managable level.

You will benefit more from the head work and carb work then you will from a big bore and later on if you do a big bore stroker kit then you will already have your carb and head done so it means even more power.

i dont know if this applies to atv's. but with cars, if you step up a bit with heads and the intake, it will slightly increase your compression ratio. it should apply to atv's too.

Not sure about the Sparks kit, but I'd bet it's a repackaged Cylinder Works or Athena.

Here's a link to the Ice Cube.
