2004 honda rancher es 4x4 shift problem

2004 honda rancher es 4x4

it will shift once when you turn on the ignition then it wont shift any more. almost as if it looses power. if you turn the ignition off and then on again it will shift once again.

Welcome to da forums... I'd start by having the battery load tested after trickle charging it at 1.5 amps,or less until it is peak charged...If the battery is bad,or weak, replace it with a new of the same group size,or larger...Next I would check all connections on the machine by unplugging every one of them, spraying electrical cleaner through each plug several times, add a dab of dielectrical grease to each female connector before plugging back together...Next I would remove the shift motor, disassemble it,clean using spray electrical cleaner several times, add a dab of dielectrical grease to each end bushing/bearing,and reassemble, bench test it...Reach a finger,or screwdriver into the shift motor housing, and turn the reduction gear inside there several turns ccw,if it stops, and won;t turn any further, turn it the opposite direction that number of turns, plus several more, reinstall the shift motor, remove the shift sensor, clean the end of it off,dab very very thing coating of dielectric grease across the contact area, reinstall, clean the sensor plug...
