1999 300 Fourtrax

My bike just died going down road. I checked spark plug; no fire. I tried plug from '05 rancher with no luck. I am new to site but thought someone might be able to give me sound advice for solving problem. thanks

If it was running and now stopped sparking, you have something in the ignition circuit messed up. Since you check the spark plug, it could be the CDI unit gave out, or your coil, or your timing. Do you have a electrical meter? You need to get the repair manual (download free on the forum) and troubleshoot the ignition circuit. It could be something as minor as a bad ground. best bet is to start eliminating components by checking them out.

I tried the coil from my '05. Didn't help. Honda shop told me that pulse generator is prone to go out. The bike did blow the fuse mounted next to battery. I replaced it. I will try to download manual and start checking. I have a OHM meter but electrical stuff is not my forte. thanks

Welcome to da forums... Get the proper spark plug for it first, then check it for fire by grounding plug to the engine and spinning it over...Blue repetitive spark is ideal,whitish/yellow colored spark is no good...If no spark at all, remove all electrical connections, inspect, spray electrical cleaner in each one several times, add dielectric grease,re-connect...Remove both battery terminals at each end, clean them, and their mounting points using sandpaper/emery cloth,etc.reinstall...Remove all fuses, replace with new same size fuses, inspect the wires coming out of the left side outer case cover from the stator...Test the coil, coil wire, and boot end using a multi meter...Download this e service manual, and save it to your desktop for fast easy referral..It contains all the necessary info concerning maintenance, repairs, rebuilding your atv... hondaatvforums.net is the password if prompted.. thanks for the reply. I am in the process of checking all of the wires. I plan to take off electrical tape and run each wire.

thanks

Since it blew a fuse, I'd check for a short somewhere. Maybe a pinched wire or lost insulation somewhere. The ignition system isn't that big so just start checking each part. I couldn't think of the pulse generator earlier, but there should be a way to check that also.

There's no need to remove the electrical tape, borrow, buy a multi meter, and check all wires for continuity...If there's a break,or short in any of them, the meter will tell you then you simply trace that wire to where the breaks at using the pointed ends on the probes until you locate it,then repair it using soldering gun,and solder with heat shrink tubing...

Also,I's start by checking the cdi for cracking on the backside which usually indicates it has overheated, and is in need of replacing,(try starting the atv while smacking the cdi with the palm of your hand sometimes gets them to work again for a short period of time),spray electrical cleaner into the run/off switch while pressing inwards on the button, and sliding it back n forth as they're prone to messing up...
