1998 Honda Foreman ES Shifting Problem

Hi guys, not seen on here in a long while, but having a (apparently) common issue: my TRX450ES Foreman (think it's actually a 2000 model, btw) does fine cranking and running, provided you put it in neutral when you shut it off. If you don't, you can't get it to change gears back to neutral, which means me having to carry a pair of vice grips to shift it back (yeah, I lost the little shifter thingy, and haven't been able to find one on ebay yet ).

Can someone tell me what I need to do? I actually took it to the local Honda place a couple years (yes, years) ago, but they blamed it on the battery. Got it home, and it did the same thing again with the new battery. I just don't get many chances to load it up and take it to spend $$, so any help is appreciated.

Have you tried adjusting the clutch free play?

Most 4-wheeler problems are caused by a loose nut connecting the handlebars and the seat!!

You only need two tools in life -- WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Hate to sound like an idiot right out of the box, but I don't know how to do that. Willing to learn, if you can describe it or point me to a link...

Since yours is the ES model, it will have a shift motor on the front of the engine and I believe the adjustment is right above the shift motor. The pictures below will show how to adjust it.

First, thanks for the fast reply and the idiot-proof instructions. Can't beat that!

Okay, did it, and the clutch actually had less play in it than the directions posted call for. What I (think I) mean is, when I loosened the lock nut, there was only about a 1/8 turn counterclockwise until I encountered resistance. As a result, when I made my adjustments, I ended up loosening (I think) the clutch play b/c I turned the adjusting screw clockwise ~ 1/8 turn past where its original position was.

After the adjustment, I got on and went for a ride, and noted that the problem is still there, and now the shift isn't as crisp while the ATV is in motion-I have to hit the button numerous times to get it to shift, etc. I'm headed out now to put it back in its original position.

So what should be my next step?
