TRX300 No spark

1991 300fw while idling looking @ the depth of a creek before crossing it died. No spark. I've been unable to locate owners or shop manual for this atv. Honda cannot supply them, Helm, their printer supplier, says they are out of print. With out a wiring diagram it's difficult to know where to start. I know my way around vehicles but everything is buried in a harness or molded in, like the coil, it's a bit of a challange. Thanks

I would start with making sure that all the wiring is still good and is not cut or chafted. Then I would replace the plug, check the ohms of the plug wire and then replacing the coil.

E-bay is always a good place for manuals. I've gotten factory service and wiring manuals for my 68 Plymouth Valiant even on there.

I got a 1991 250X manual the electrical system should be really close. I have already uploaded the electrical troubleshooting section for someone else if you still need it i can email it to you this evening when I get home. Just send me a pm with your E-mail addy and I will gladly help you out. But I'm guessing the ignition module took a crap.

At the cost of a module unit I'd like to verify that the pick up or trigger coil (automotive terms I know........) is sending a signal to the module. There is a wire bundle coming out of the right side of the engine, breaks into 2 units, one 3 wire that goes to 3x3 finned alum box in front of the left rear tire. I assume this is a rectifier for the charging system. The 2nd is a 2 wire unit, and I would think that is the triggering mechanism for the ignition. Cranking the engine should give a weak voltage every time it wants to fire the module. This is the thinking I would like to verify. I've only had this unit on the farm for about 10 days, so I've not accumulated any svc info yet

Just a dumb question.... You are not in reverse are you? These quads have a reverse lockout so it wont start while rewind is engaged. you will not get any saprk if it is. just athought. if you want the trouble shoot procedures i can mail them to you? It tells you how to check each component with a meter.

I thought about that right away, but it won't crank if it's not in neutral, right?
But.........I was shifting into reverse when it quit. I was looking a rain swollen creek, decided that 4-5' would not be real smart to cross, so I was going to back out of there............I'm not sure how to leave my e-mail, other than in the body of this message. I did "leave a message" for you after your last post, offering to send a wiring diagram. It looked like it went into a message area of some sort. I clicked on your user name and it led me there, again, not sure.
Thanks

IF i was guessing i would say that the sensor is still reading that your in reverse while your not, you may also want to look into the kill switch on your left handerlbar and track down those wires they tend to melt together from time to time.

I haven't made it home sorry we have been staying at the beach this week I should be home tonight. As josh stated check your Kill switch.
You were in Rev. when it died ok look on the left frameside upo close to where the seat and plastic mets there is a cluster of wires there. Look for a gray wire and a gray/black they will have a male/female connectoron each of them unplug them and run a jumper between the harness side of the wire and see if it will start. LEt us Know what happens
