Well found a deal on a nice 03 rancher. Decided to pic it up and work on over the winter. What I know it needs pull start fixed, new rear plastics, brakes all around, a battery and a carb cleaning. The front wheel has a lot of play up and down left and right. So I'm guessing wheel bearings as well.
So far I have the recoil pull start off and most of the rear plastics. New pull start is on its way. Something internally in it works when it's off but as soon as I put it back on doesn't seem to want to recoil or turn the gear.
Is the engine locked up. The pull starter turns the flywheel/rotor, not much else to go wrong. See if you can spin the engine with a socket wrench on the rotor bolt
I can turn the the gear the recoil pull starter turns by hand and the piston moves. I've also hooked a battery up and wants to turn over and will with starter fluid but cuts off
I was just messing with the pull start and it def not seized. I can hear the piston when I turn the pull start pulley it's free but has resistance. I think the issue has to be the pull start. Doesn't seem to grab the pulley to turn it. Thinking It's too warn down. Teeth don't catch
It seems odd that the pull start would be worn down. Those things hardly ever get used on a Rancher. Anyway, a simple visual inspection of the mechanism should reveal why it's not grabbing like it should.
It pulls rope and doesn't retract? I thought you said the problem was that the pull starter didn't grab the motor to turn it over. Which is it? If you pull the rope out and it doesn't retract, that sounds like the main spring in the pull starter is broken. Again, a visual inspection should reveal if that is the case.
OP, you need to remove the rope parts off of the housing, and have a look at the rusty spring under there. AND YES, I'LL BANK ON IT BEING RUSTY !..LOL. odds are, it's broken, and not latched onto the outer flange ?.
If I turn part 10by hand it turns but when I reattach the rope pull side it won't turn #10. Is there a way it needs to line up? Also rope retracts fine when I don't have it on but when I put it on doesn't retract
then it's full of mud, rust ?. that main spring is what pulls the rope back in. if it's full of mud/sand/dirt, what ever under the rope part ?, it won't retract the rope. you just have to tear it apart, and have a look. these things are pretty simple to understand how they work. again..just be careful when removing the ropes plastic round part !, most times you can lift the rope part out of the housing without disturbing the spring ?, but !!!..this is not always the case !..lol. once you remove the round part holding your rope ?, and can see the spring ( hopefully not in your face ?!..lol ) MAKE NOTE OF WHICH WAY IT IS WOUND INSIDE THE MIDDLE PART ?!!. getting it wound back in there...AND THE RIGHT WAY ?!, can be a time killer !, and a face scratcher !..lmao.
well, you can still take that old one apart, clean it up, fix it, and have a spare ?..but yeah, if your not wanting to mess with it ?, 40 bucks is faster to replace with a new one..lol.
New pull start is here just as I figured old one out. I'll have a spare. There is a piece that pops out and turns the pulley. Mud caked so bad it turns but that piece that pops out and turns pulley is stuck. Cleaning old one up and I'll save it
Thanks... I got a lot of things done today. The pull start is on. Starter installed. New rear plastics on. Got a broken bolt on the luggage rack so I haven't put it in yet. Carb is off, just need to get hoses off and clean it up. Also got the rear tires back today. We have progress
Ok so pulled carb off today. Fuel line had what feels like oil in it came out clumpy the bowl in the carb needs major overhaul but I'm still trying to figure out if it's oil and has gas mixed. I can smell gas or some other junk they poured in to clean the carb
ok, that is the fuel inlet.i agree with cjman, 2-stroke oil I bet. kinda wondering about that carb though ?, only china carbs have a plastic inlet on the carb, most oem carbs from Honda have that brass piece pressed into the carb body. unless that's just dirty ?, and it's all brass ?.
