Electric Shift Problems

I have a 2001 Rancher.We got two feet of snow in South Jersey friday and Saturday and I've been plowing snow pretty steady.I noticed the electric shift was not down shifting right.You would have to push the button a couple times before it shifted .Shifting up was find. Finally it would not shift down at all.I shifted up to fifth gear thinking maybe something was stuck. It will not shift and for a period of time you could hear the clicking like it was shifting but nothing happened and gear indicator stayed in fifth gear.Now it won't even click.The manual shift tool takes it out of gear but it will not start Does anyone have any ideas.We could get another foot of snow tuesday night.Thanks for any info edwhitetail@comcast.net

My guess is there is a ton of moisture in a plug somewhere If you have a garage try to get the snow melted off and see if that makes a difference. Welcome to the forums!!!!!

I agree with Saber6 that it is probably moisture. Happens to mine here in Wisconsin when I am plowing but fortunately for me it has been slow to react only. Actually I don't think it is the moisture as much as the cold because I have taken mine in very deep water and haven't experienced shifting issues. On another note since you're doing a lot of plowing, have you installed the quick reverse kit (or make one yourself) so you don't have to mess with your thumb switch anymore?

What is the quick reverse kit you are talking about?

It's sells on ebay for about 10 bucks and it keeps the shift cable engaged so you never have to use the thumb switch and brake handle. All you do is shift up or down. Works great.

All you have to do is adjust the cable up with the two nuts where the cable attaches at the engine. It does the same thing and costs nothing. Takes about 30 seconds to do. That the first thing I do when I buy an ATV.

Just loosen the bottom nut all the way up. Then tighten the top nut until the lever is all the way up. Now tighten the bottom nut back up to lock it in place.

Ok, that's what I was thinking it might be. I did the same thing with a plastic ink pen barrel cut to length and slit up the side. Free and easy to take off if need be.
