How far out are they? You could bend a them or get stranded out in the middle of no where.

It's probably as bad to ride around with no oil, take about 45 min and adjust them, your quad will thank you, not to mention sound better. Don't forget DO NOT START your quad before you do the adjustment do it completely cold.

Well lets start with the basics.... You start up your engine and theres the faint tick tick tick tick tick tick you've always heard and assumed to be normal. As you ride the engine gets hotter and hotter and the tick tick tick is louder now. Thats loose valves telling you that they need adjusting.
The not so basic...... Your valve system is what controls intake (air/fuel delivery) and exhaust (combustion release)into the cylinder. if you have improper valve adjustment you will notice a conciderable loss of power, perfomance, ECT. too loose you will hear a noticeable tap or ticking. If the valves are too tight you will not hear that but you may have either a very lopey engine due to the valves openeing and closing so close to eachother plus you risk bending a valve. I hope this helps you in understanding if you can tell if valves need adjusting, I know I might have ventured off topic a bit but you get the idea.

Is it fair to assume that most of the time under most normal conditions that the valves will loosen, rather than tighten over time?
And, is it also true that if the ticking doesn't get louder as the engine becomes warmer, then chances are everything is OK?
I heard ticking on just about everything I've ever owned, but it's never gotten noticably louder as the engine warmed up.

It is a pretty obvious tick when the motor is warm. Plus, Honda's motors sound a little weird on the top. If you have a quiet exhaust, you can actually here the cam inside working. I bought my TRX450 at the beginning of the riding season in 2007. 3 summers of HARD riding and racing, my valves have only needed adjusting 1 time. They have been perfectly in spec since April of 2008.
