We were snowed in this weekend so I figured I'd check my valves. I've got 80 hours on the '07 680 that I picked up a couple of weeks ago and don't think they've been checked. After I took the recoil starter all apart and cleaned out all of the dried mud, I checked the valves. They were all a little on the tight side and I adjusted them to specs. One problem that I ran into was that it felt like the adjusting screw or top of the valve was trapping the feeler guage. It would slide in ok but was real rough and scratchy feeling pulling it out. Now I have a loose exhaust valve. I should have pulled the adjuster screws out and inspected the ends of the valves and the ends of the screws but I thought I had them pretty close. I'm going to order some new adjuster screws and see if that's the problem. Has anyone experienced this issue?

I pulled it apart again last night. I got some new adjusting screws this week so I pulled out the old ones. The old screws looked fine but the ends of the valves had a shiny wear mark in the middle but there was a dark circle around the the edges. I touched up the ends of the vavles with some #200 wet n dry then cleaned and oiled the area. I put in the new screws, adjusted them and all is well now. I don't know if there was a little wear in the center of the valves or some kind of build up around the edges. Maybe a combination of both. Got them properly adjusted and it sounds great now.

wow,,my 98 300ex has never had a valve adjustment,,reading some of these post has me a little scared now

LMAO, go do it!!!! I check my valves once a year, and after 3 years of racing they have only had to be adjusted twice.

^ so i guess your saying that when the guy at the dealership back in 98' said for me to bring it back after 30hrs for valve adjustment he didnt mean 12 years later?lol...will a good service manual tell me everything i might not already know for the job?

:if this makes it slower im gonna be mad at everyone in this thread

I never check my valves, unless I hear them start ticking. I guess I am just lazy, but I have never had any valve/rocker problems. If they start getting loud, I do adjust them immediately, though.
