They didn't make an '86 Fourtrax 300. If it's an '86, it must be a 250 or 350. If it's a Fourtrax 300, it's an '88-'00. If it's a Fourtrax 300, any year should fit I think. If it's a 250, it can probably be made to work, but I would say the plugs on the wires are different and would have to be cut.

I just checked and the part numbers are different, so there's something different about the keyswitch between the two years, but I would guess that it's probably the color of the wires or the plugs on the end of the wires. It might not plug directly up, but I don't see why it can't be made to work, since it only has an on and off position. You could probably cut the plugs on the wires and wire it straight up.

I just looked at the keyswitches on the '89 wiring diagram and the '98 wiring diagram and it looks like the '89 has an extra wire coming out of the keyswitch for the accessory plug, because it's wired for the acc. plug to work without the key being on. The '98 is wired so that the key has to be turned on before the acc. plug will work. I think the keyswitch would still work, but you would have to leave the wire for the acc. plug unhooked. Your acc. plug would still work when the key is on, though, because the '98 model acc. plug is tied into the wiring after the power goes through the switch and back out. The keyswitch might even plug into the '98 wiring harness, I'm not sure about the plugs. If the plugs are different, you would have to cut the plugs and and change the plugs or wire it straight up by using butt connectors.

I lost the keys for my 300EX one time when we went up to VT to ride and I just spliced the two wires together to eliminate the key all together. When I got home I found the key in my driveway, lol and I just rewired back to the way it was.

I replaced the key switch on my sons '86 125 four trax with a cheap after market key switch, works perfect, just had to use butt connectors for the wires. all you have to do is make sure the replacement switch has the same number of wires to connect to.
