what year is my engine?
i recently bought a 1991 fourtrax 300 4x4, the guy said it needed a stator, but i checked it and i noticed that i have spark only after i let go of the starter button, i did some reading on other fourms and on here and i have noticed that this is a common problem, a cdi problem from my understanding? well i went ahead and ordered a cdi for a 91 and hooked it up and i got absolutely nothing!!, i hooked the old one i had back up and i still had spark after i had let go of the starter button, and i realize that the cdi NEEDS to be the same as the year of engine, well i did some more looking and i believe that this might not be the original motor, my ENGINE serial number is TE14E-8403860, can anyone tell me what year engine this would be? model it is from?

Welcome to the forums. I don't know of any way to tell the year by looking at the engine number. "TE14E" is just the designation for the engine code and "8403860" is the engine production number. You may be able to call a dealer and they might be able to tell you the year. They probably have a list of all the production numbers that were manufactured for each year.

welcome to the forums..as for the engine..this doesn't matter..almost all the trx300 engines are the same..i would say you did not get the right c.d.i ??..if it's not from your year..then..yeah..i'd say this is your problem. as for the spark issue..push button..only sparks when you let off..this is a c.d.i issue.

where did you buy the new c.d.i ?..dealership ?..or ebay ?..if it was ebay..i would not trust those clowns..most of them do not know what they are pulling off a bike..not to mention..they have no way of testing them..unless they took it off a running bike ???..nope..you should buy the c.d.i's from a dealership...this is a given !.

thanks guys for the quick responses, the cdi is new from dealer, but if i dont know what year engine it is, then how would i go about getting the right cdi? if i was to get a stator and cdi from a same year quad would that fix my issue, or is the timing different between years also?

I just wanted to add something to this. Some of the Fourtrax 300s used Mitsba Denki brand stators and flywheels and some of them used Nippon Denso brand stators and flywheels. If you mix one brand of flywheel with the other brand of stator and vice versa, they won't work. It doesn't matter about the year. A certain year can have either of these brands, as long as the brand of both the stator and flywheel match. I don't think the CDI has to be matched with the brand of the stator and flywheel, though. The CDI just has to be the correct one for the year of the ATV because the wiring is different on some years. I just thought i would mention this, just in case someone may have replaced the stator or flywheel and didn't match the brands.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. Click on the link below. The last post in the thread explains the issue.
