2006 Foreman 500 Rebuild

Hello All,
I'm a newbie on this forum, but I recentely started a pretty good project and after reading the different threads on here, I can use some of the good information and feedback that is available on here. I recentely picked up an 06 Honda Foreman 500 that is in pretty rough shape, however it has some nice aftermarket parts on it (rims, tires, pipe, K&N, lift kit). The bike has had a snorkel added to it and obviously it was used. I brought it home and did get it running. It definately needs a top end job, as it smokes and has valve train noise, however, I don't like to do things halfway. So the plan is, remove all plastics, pull the cylinder off in frame, then remove the engine. I want to split the cases for inspection, and to remove any of the residue from the snorkeling adventures. Bore cylinder, rework valves, reassemble cases, and then turn my attention to the rolling chasis. Inspect CV joints and boots, bearings etc. Then just clean it all up and reassemble. Some of my plastics are salvageable, so are not. They have been drilled and tyrapped and rigged up pretty good. Anyway, that is the plan so far. I have started the dissamble already and will post some pics as soon as I figure out how.

Welcome dude !! The best intentions sometimes are the worst ! If you never rebuilt an motor before then I would consider taking it to a professional and having it done !! Most people on sites like this have done a few and learned from their mistakes,I'm not trying to discourage you ,just trying to give you sound advice !I have rebuilt motors before but never a motorcycle motor and there is alot involved in it .But if you can giver he|| man !!! I was think that maybe they might have swamped that thing !! How much did you pay for it ??!!

Appreciate the heads up, but this isin't my first rebuild. I have done several in the past, so buiding the motor is no problem. There just seems to be a lot of other opinions on here as to how to do something, so if I can learn something new from someone, I'm all ears. I gave $500 for it. I believe I could easily get my money back by parting it out, but I was kinda in the mood for a new project.

I am working on my first rebuild, not too hard, the design is relatively simple and the manual is a MUST. Hopefully you have a crap load of metric sized tools because if you dont before this is over you will own them. I really hope you bought it right, because you will have at least $1500 in all the parts you will need, maybe less depending on the shape she is in....the snorkel tells me this quad has been used as a submarine....not the intentions of the manufacturer and causes all kinds of grief on the bike, which means $$ to you. More experienced minds than mine will tell you what you are going to need, there are alot of guys on here with the knowledge and the expertise to help you along. I would order everything ahead of time so there isnt any waiting time for parts, other than the unexpected. I used ebay, local Honda dealer and Motosport for my parts and was able to be somewhat thrifty when purchasing. Good luck and keep is posted WITH PICTURES. (we have a picture fetish around here)

Yes, it has definately been rode hard and put up wet. I did crank it prior to starting to tear it down, so I do know that the transmission and clutches are good and there are no bottom end knocks. Mainly it has just been abused. Here are the a few pics after I took the plastic off. Check out the oil cooler!!! Needless to say it was totally non functioning. There is also a pic looking down into a portion of the snorkel. Lots of mud there. Thankfully it did have a good air filter on it. It will be a good project, it just needs some love.
