Prairie 400 resto!

I started this on another forum, but some of you honda guys might enjoy this as well, heres whats happened so far.

Heres my new project bike, 2000 kawasaki prairie 400 4x4 liquid cooled. 1800 miles, Pics are of one in the same cosmetic condition, I'll take pics of the bike next week when I get it back home. I plan on taking it completely down to the frame and rebuilding from the ground up. Its had a hard life so it needs tlc.

First step after tear down will be bringing the engine inside and rebuilding it. I'm undecided what to do with it, need opinions! Of course I can go back all stock, inspect and clean the bottom end and have whatever needs replacing done, new seals, cylinder hone, gasket kit, valve guide seals button it up and be done, but thats no fun, right?

So what direction should I take?

Option 1:I contacted four stroke tech, he has a prototype stroker crank and 2mm over piston, custom cam and heavy duty valve springs he will sell me for 685, then still need to add in valve guide seals, gasket kit and machine shop work...

2: Bore it out a little, stick with stock crank and cam, snorkel and exhaust, rejet.

3: Back to stock, honing if its not too bad off, snorkel pipe and exhaust.

4: Your idea I haven't considered?

It needs a new clutch so whichever route I go it will be getting a comet hpq103 racing clutch with engine brake delete for 300 bucks.

Does anybody have any experience with this quad? Are they pretty solid? I'm not sure what the engine will handle as far as mods and performance parts go, which is why I'm having a hard time deciding which rebuild to go with...

Also, any experience with the four stroke tech company? Good/bad products? Heard anything about build quality?

Any input is much appreciated! My budget for this build should be around 1300, got some cool mods in mind once I'm ready for reassembly.

---- FST sold the stroker kit, so decided to bore it over a few sizes with 11:1 compression piston----

'bout a week later:

Got parts! That part lot I got off ebay came in, wiring harness, headlights, ecm module, half shaft, front knuckle, starter solenoid, etc. 38 bucks! All seems to be in pretty good shape, wireing harness has electrical tape on it, but if the ecm is good it was well worth it, mainly bought it for the knuckle and drive shaft... Work will start as soon as the 'zuki sells. Got two buyers coming out this weekend, hopefully one comes through.

after weekend:

'Zukis sold, parts ordered and the prairies sitting in the garage, work starts first thing tomorrow!

Goal is to get the motor on the bench and the whole quad in boxes in the basement so I can work on one thing at a time...

Things ordered so far-

D.I.D timing chain (friend of a friend of a friend of a dealers friend found me one, paid 100 bucks for it) (aka... Shadetree!

Engine gasket and oil seal kit- 108

FST should be getting my an invoice and be shipping out the piston kit anyday now so I can get going on that...

As soon as I get into the bottom end I will order up the oil pump, anything worn etc...

next weekend:

Only had 3 hours to work on it today, got 80% to the point of pulling the engine, just have to pull the cvt guts out, cooling system and yank the engine on out...

Sorry for the blurry pics, its about 35 out and my hands kept shaking, lol. I've also got a video of it running, don't know how to post it up yet but I'll mess with getting a youtube account tonight...

And no it wasn't recorded with a calculator, it was a tracfone (dumbed down iphone), lol

yesterday:
spent 2 hours on it today, motors all ready to come out, but stripped 2 of 4 screws holding the floor board on thats in the way... Next weekend I'll get the engine on the bench and start working on it...

today: (pics to come)

Got the floor board, foot brake, and cvt cover off no problem, tried getting the primary off with no luck. Old trick of using motor oil down the hole with tape on the bolt didn't work, oil disappeared to somewhere, no clue where though. Just ordered a 30 dollar puller I'll only use once, but oh well...

Nice Build! My Grandpa has a 99' 400 and my uncle has a 98'. They are great quads and never had any major problems. In fact, my uncle is working out of state and he brought it over for me to ride till he gets back. PS. they are really loud when the exhaust packing goes lol

Thanks! After I get it rebuild I'm cutting open the exhaust to do a little surgery, going to cut the spark arrester in half and elongate and bend open the propeller a little then weld back on the cap... Goal is to get more "tone" without being loud and sounding like a gutted can... I'm hoping it will be pretty quick running 11:1 with snorks, uni filter, rejet and aftermarket clutch. Goal is to get the old slugs wheels to hang in the air.

you shake almost as bad as me! LOL. this ought to be interesting. you should look into different weights for the belt so you dont have to wind it up so much to get her going....just a thought.

Yeah, I know, it took me three trys to get that one, lol. I'm going to look into different weights when I get it going, I'm not sure what I will like, as I've never owned a belt drive before. But they are cheap enough to play around with different set-ups, thanks for the idea.

The wrenches haven't got frozen to my palm yet, so were doing ok, lol. Once I get the engine into the back room where I've got the heat and a work bench I'll be a lot happier though, lol.

If you have problems with the belt system, don't give up on belt drives until you try a Yamaha. Yamaha has a great belt system and you don't have to keep adjusting it. There is no adjustment on Yamahas belt systems and it's not needed with their setup. It's practically maintenance free.

You only need two tools in life -- WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

I love belt drives! I've just never had to tune one before, lol. They make hill climbing a breeze, my uncle climbs stuff on his polaris 600 sportsman that I could never attempt on a semi-auto bike, just because of all the stop-go and hoping over things without down shifting and loosing momentum...

Granted the polaris cvt doesn't exactly shine but its what got me hooked on cvts...
