Its funny we think electric vehicles cant pull anything but thats completely wrong and you probably see one every week, modern locomotives. They are diesel powered generators and the traction motors are huge electric motors. This is an extremely efficient system, no clutches, transmissions to wear out or break, increased fuel economy. If a car company would build a car that ran on a generator say a 500 cc engine and had an auto throttle feature like generators have and would idle up on demand, you could maybe get 50-60 miles a gallon. Yes this is just a guess, but really it is very possible, economical, efficient, and smart, thats why its not in production. These modern hybrids suck big time cause theyre not really an efficient system.

Well???? if you think about it back before there were self-powered carts there were horses and horse drawn cars for transportation I'm sure people then act like people do now when technology grows beyond the norm. It's like any other thing that came out in the last 25 years. When I was a teen in the 80s a cell phone was just something you saw in movies, simply because no one could afford one, now 90% of the planets population own one, kids included. A house phone is a thing of the past. gasoline engine will always be here but I bet they will end up like the rotary phone hangin on Shades wall..LMAO "only a few will own them. If you have never driven a Hybrid I suggest you try one out I know they aren't completely electric but they really are an impressive vehicle.

My wife has a prius, on average 48-50 mpg bought it new in 07 it will be paid off this month, we put over 120k miles on in 5 yrs and it is fun to drive and there is plenty of room for me I am a big caveman 6'1 @290# we have taken it cross country twice .
We have even slept in it on our trip through winter in a rest area while snowing and let the car run with heat on , it starts and stops by itself so no asphyxiation. I am a believer, I have also driven in a hybrid bus built by GM it was great too.

actually, with a high efficiency single cylinder diesel generator and a battery bank system you could get FAR beyond 50-60 miles to the gallon. A LOT more. you don't want to do direct drive to electric like a locomotive. that's not efficient.
what you want is a bunch of batteries and a really high output generator. the generator would only kick on when the battery pack hit a certain charge level and only stay on till the battery was topped off or the drain on the battery packs stopped.
shadetree, i think you need to look at some more electric motors. ever checked the torque on a starter motor? with the proper battery pack and a non-lardass rider, you can make vehicle capable of moving you a good 20 mph.....with just a starter motor from your average car. they scale up REALLY well.
